Introduction
Sewa Bharti is one of the largest non-governmental organizations (NGOs)  working for the upliftment and empowerment of the neglected and underprivileged sections of society, particularly Empowerment of communities, Secure sustainable livelihoods, Promotion of micro-finance, Promotion of societal peace, Alternative energy option, Community based calamity preparedness, Promotion of people’s culture, Research and documentation since its inception in 1979 at Delhi. In these days of rising prices and increasing domestic needs, it is well neighed impossible for one person of a poor family to take the entire economic load of his family. He needs the support of the other members of the family. Besides looking after the children, the women compulsorily have to come forward to provide economic support to the family. Since they are unskilled, they generally tend to get low-paid tiring menial jobs. Sewa Bharti came forward and set up tailoring and stitching centers to train the slum dwellers so that they can adequately support their families. Sewa Bharti has set up more than 160 such stitching and tailoring centers in the various slums of Delhi, which provide tailoring and stitching to more than 5000 women. Some of these centers provide proficient training, thus leading to their empowerment. Apart from providing economic upliftment, it has provided status to the women of the slums. Wherever there is a need, we provide literacy and primary education to such women. These teaching centers are the hubs of monthly meetings, wherein various topics related to the empowerment of women are discussed. Women, thus become more enlightened and empowered. Out of these centers, a few self-help groups have also emerged.
